All Songs Live! Blu-ray BOX track list announced!

I have just found the track list for Oku Hanako’s upcoming Blu-ray release, “Oku Hanako 10 Shuunen Arigatou! Hikigatari Zenkyoku Live! Blu-ray BOX” / 『奥華子10周年ありがとう!弾き語り全曲ライブ!Blu-rayBOX』 (“Oku Hanako 10 Years Thank You! Hikigatari All Songs Live! Blu-ray BOX”). The release is scheduled for December 21 of this year. Priced at ¥15000, this is her most expensive release yet, even more so than the “875 BOX” edition of “Oku Hanako BEST -My Letters” (¥8750).

The contents of the Blu-ray BOX

True to its name, it looks like the box’s four discs contain 151 songs: all her original songs that were released since her first indies release in 2000, Ai no Shizuku / 愛のしずく, as well as her original songs from the 2009 Oku Hanako Day concert, sung live in concert. This does not include the CM songs such as the TEPCO jingle and the Café Restaurant Gusto jingle. Also not included are her really obscure indies songs like Mou Nakanaide / もう泣かないで, Suki na Hito / 好きな人 and Kageriyuku Machi de / かげりゆく街で.

There is one song on the list that doesn’t seem to fit the pattern: Mirai no Iro / 未来の色, track 13 on disc 2. This song was not released on an album and was not sung at the Oku Hanako Day concert. According to that blog post by noburin28[jp], it was sung on June 25, 1999 at the LAPIN ET HALOT, and again on January 18, 2001 at the Star Pine’s Café, which makes this at least as old as Ai no Shizuku.

Discs 1 and 2 cover the concert held on July 17, 2016 held at the Yomiuri Hall and discs 3 and 4 cover the concert held on July 18, 2016, also at the Yomiuri Hall.

Is there a song here you don’t recognize or want more information about? Does it look like there’s a song missing? Leave a comment below!

  2. For some reason, Dosanko Hanako no Uta is the first song I heard from Hanako san so it would be absolutely surreal to watch her perform it live.
Wanna pull the trigger on this, knowing it will be well worth but thinking about the excruciating shipping time discourages me so much.

    • What’s a little shipping time compared to the amount of time you’ll have it to enjoy? I say if you think it’s worth getting, ignoring the shipping time, then go for it!

      • What’s a little $ compared to the amount of time you’ll have it to enjoy? I say if you think it’s worth getting, ignoring the $, then go for it! Imagine listening to this, lets say for 2 weeks (thats conservative estimate) then think of the cost of how much it really is per minute 😉

how much is it anyway? and can you buy it at costco? lol

      • The cost is ¥15000 before tax, which is about $127 US today. You definitely won’t be able to find this at a Costco (can you find any of her releases outside of Asia?); actually, the only way to buy this that I’ve been able to find is straight from Pony Canyon’s Shopping Club. I’m not sure if they’ll open it up later to general distribution or keep it as a limited edition release, but I think it would be foolish of them to not do a general distribution edition later on.

  3. Here’s my idea for an “all songs live” compilation.
Create a historic series of her live performances. It would start with some grainy video from the early days, and the subway years. Then there could be all the songs from each of her DVDs already released. Intersperse that with various TV appearances and commercials. The songs have to be in chronological order, mostly from when they were written or appeared on a record.

  4. The songs are performed from two days of concerts? It seems like with about 37 songs on each disk, that would mean you would need four concerts wouldn’t you? The four colors of the four packages might indicate that these are four shows?

    • I think it was indeed four shows spread out over two days. The site labels each disc with a letter, suggesting four performances. I didn’t realize it then, but there was something about deciding the song order for the four performances back in March.

  5. With all of these “best of” concerts and compilation albums I fear that Ms. Oku is planning the end of her music career. So many groups put out a “Greatest Hits” then they are over. I would not expect that from Hanako Oku.

    • I can see why you might think that, but with all the songs she’s been asked to write for various big productions, I don’t think she’s slowing down any time soon. I’m sure all these “best of” compilations are just because of the 10th anniversary. I expect another wave of “best of” in 15 years for the 25th if she’s still active then.

  7. Well that’s quite a price tag. I have to say I’m rather bad at remembering song names, but I’ll probably recognize most of them once I hear them. Although, the three you mentioned in the beginning I have absolutely no recollection of, Mou Nakanaide / もう泣かないで, Suki na Hito / 好きな人 and Kageriyuku Machi de / かげりゆく街で. Do you maybe have any information on these or where to find them?

    • I would be surprised if you had even heard of them at all. According to noburin28, Mou Nakanaide / もう泣かないで and Suki na Hito / 好きな人 were made when Oku-san was still in high school, which makes them almost as old as Kataomoi / 片想い. Very little is known about them. The following is what I gathered from noburin28’s post.

Mou Nakanaide / もう泣かないで (“Don’t Cry Anymore”) is a song that she wrote in high school and, perhaps contrary to what the title might suggest, is actually a bright song. She sang it at the Kohoku Mosaic Mall on February 11 and 12, 2001. Here’s a line of the lyrics:

      もう泣かないでその手をとって、いつまでもくよくよしないで
mou nakanaide sono te wo totte, itsumo de mo kuyokuyo shinaide
Don’t cry anymore; take that hand and never worry

Suki na Hito / 好きな人 (“Person I Like”) can actually refer to two songs; one is the old name of Lost Time / ロスタイム, and the other is the indies song that she made in high school. It was sung second at the LAPIN ET HALOT performance[jp], and again in front of the Yokohama Marine Tower on July 1, 2001. It’s about honest feelings and it’s apparently easy to understand.

Kageriyuku Machi de / かげりゆく街で (“In the Fading Town”(?)) was sung at the Takadanobaba CLUB PHASE on January 25, 2002, and she purportedly said that she “made the song yesterday”. The lyrics are apparently about the singer standing in a cold winter scene with a trench coat and a north wind in a grey city.

To my knowledge, there are no recordings of these songs online.

      • That would explain it. I’m honestly a little curious as to how this turns out because if every piece was sung live recently, then it could be interesting to note how she sings differently than she used to; especially from her older debut tracks. Not curious enough to purchase it though. I’m sure I’ll find an alternative method of acquiring it.

      • Indeed. If Chiisa na Ari / 小さなアリ is any indication, being her most recent released live track and an indies song at that, I would expect vibrato and overall more mature singing techniques. I don’t think we’ll get the lower range that she exhibited in some of her indies tracks like Gekkou / 月光 and Oshibana / 押し花, but I also don’t think we’ll hear too much of the “cutesy” voice that she used for the 2012 remakes of said songs. Basically what we heard for her 2016 Kusabi / 楔 release.

      • I did quite like her lower range, especially in Gekkou but I suppose I can do without it; I do hope that she sings it different than her latest rendition of Kusabi though. The original is what made me fall in love to begin with and the new one simply doesn’t do it for me. I’m likely just biased because that was the first version I listened to, but it sounded more sincere and genuine to me which played a large part in me liking it. That and it just sounds better in general haha.

  8. “it looks like the box’s four discs contain all original songs that were released since her first indies release in 2000” may not be completely true. The last track on Ai no Shizuku / 愛のしずく was labelled “Secret Track”, and according to noburin28, it starts with the words “kokoro ga itakute” / 「心が痛くて」. None of her songs start with that, and the only song that has those words is Period / ピリオド, and I highly doubt that was what the “Secret Track” is.

What are your thoughts on Oku Hanako?
