Fan-translated and instrumental covers of Kawaranai Mono / 変わらないもの

July 15, 2016 was the tenth anniversary of “Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo” / 時をかける少女 (“tokikake”; English title: “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time”), the movie that made Oku Hanako famous. If you recall, her songs Garnet / ガーネット and Kawaranai Mono / 変わらないもの were made as the theme and insert songs respectively.

As with any song, someone is bound to make a cover. Many are mediocre and potentially ear-scratching, but there will always be some that stand out from the rest.

In honour of the tenth anniversary of the movie, I’ve compiled what I think are the best and most interesting fan covers of Kawaranai Mono / 変わらないもの. About half of these are actually not in Japanese; instead, they’re fan-translated covers. The other half are instrumental covers.

If this is not a song that you can listen to over and over again without getting tired, I highly suggest taking breaks in between songs. It’s a really good song and you wouldn’t want to ruin it for yourself.

Playlist

This post is broken up into multiple pages to speed up loading times.

  1. Moni (English)
  2. SallyJanuary (German)
  3. Syu214 (Solo Guitar)
  4. viiAkano (Filipino)
  5. DYLZAL/Draconequus (Electric Guitar)
  6. Kyle Landry (Solo Piano)
  7. Bonus

Moni (English)

Since this is an English blog, we begin the playlist with an English cover by Moni. I honestly think this is good enough to replace the original in the English dub if they wanted to dub the songs as well (although I’m glad they didn’t, otherwise I wouldn’t have found out about Oku-san).

The YouTube version has sound effects from the movie. The SoundCloud version is clean.

[HD] (Re-upload) ENGLISH The Girl Who Leapt Through Time – Kawaranai Mono {Moni} by Monistar [YouTube]

The lyrics used in this cover are brilliant and I commend Moni and Jerry for their efforts. It is a very liberal translation of the original song, but it still captures the intent and the emotion of the original. Plus, it follows the meaning of the original almost line to line.

Next: SallyJanuary (German)

Lyrics

Time can never change our laughs that carried in the wind
Or the times that we would fight without a reason
Looking back, I think I just wanted to see a different side of you

Remembering your laughing eyes, your smile never really dies
All of these memories are still tucked in my beating heart
In this world full of strangers, I run to you
‘Cause I know you’ll never let me down

Searching for the things that always remain the same
I’ll never forget your smile on that bright and sunny day
These feelings, they will never change, transcending time and space
I just want to meet you now, but you’ve gone without a trace

Thoughts of you still pushing back to me now and again
Whenever I see you, I see just more than just a friend
Waiting for the things to end so I could see you someday soon again

I can see right through your disguise; those eyes, they betray your lies
Even now I can see you as clear as the bluest sky
Not knowing what the future held for us
You and I dived deep into love

Searching for the things that always remain the same
I wonder how we found ourselves on that unfamiliar place
If the future brings us to the place where we belong
I promise I will live again, ’cause it’s you that keeps me strong

As life unfolds, I try to find a reason to live on
I embrace the life that I have as long as it’s not wrong
And lights illuminate the path that we both walked upon
Glancing back in time, I smile knowing that I’m not alone

Searching for the things that always remain the same
I’ll never forget your smile on that bright and sunny day
Our feelings, they will never change, transcending time and space
I just want to meet you now, but you’ve gone without a trace

I just want to meet you now, but you’ve gone so far away

  1. Yup, it’s a great feat to make a translation that conveys the original’s intent and emotion, is a nice fit to the tune, and sounds good.

    • I still haven’t made it, but I will get around to it someday. It will probably be a concert band or orchestral arrangement because I’m wont to do those and because I haven’t been able to find any such arrangements yet.

If you were thinking of one of the pieces that I’ve already made, it was probably Dreaming, which was partly inspired Kimi no Egao / 君の笑顔.

  2. Wow, that vocal synth is really amazing! I would never have guessed that this is fully synthesized! It sounds somehow processed, but still very believable. Again – wow!

    • Well, it’s not completely synthesized. The only one that I know that is is Utane Utau / 唄音ウタ; the rest get people to provide voice samples, much like how they make the voice banks for text-to-speech software. But yes, it’s quite impressive.

What are your thoughts on Oku Hanako?
