Translation for Lost Time / ロスタイム

ROSUTAIMU / ロスタイム: “lost time”. (ロス: “loss/lost”; タイム: “time”).

I’ve been told that today, March 20, is Oku Hanako’s birthday! As a tribute to her, I’ve added a new translation. It may not be the happiest kind of song, but it is a beautiful song with even more beautiful lyrics.

One is inclined to think of the title as “Loss Time” since “lost” is usually transliterated to ロスト (rosuto). However, to facilitate pronunciation, the final “t” in “lost” is just mixed into the first “t” of time, making it “lost time”—i.e. time that is lost (as opposed to a time of loss). In this song, the singer reflects on all the time she has spent with her loved one, whom she has to part ways with. She vows not to lose that time or the memories of it.

Lyrics

Translation

Falling too much in love was lonely
Even though I wanted to apologize, I still hurt you
I was always spoiled by your kindness, wasn’t I?

We teased each other over trivial things,
And even planted a few kisses on our entwined fingers
But even though we’ll see each other again soon, at the ticket gate I was crying as well

You taught me loneliness, and anxiety, and how to love
At the end, please, teach me how to let go of someone I love

Our chance encounter, our parting: they were all days that passed by like dreams
Every time I think of your voice—your warmth—I can’t move, even ’til now

Your sleeping face; your peevish grin; the two moles lined up on your back
You didn’t want anyone to see them—so I remember you saying

You taught me love, and solitude, and how to dote on someone
At the end, please, teach me how to let go of someone I love

The times we talked about our dreams, all the different places we walked together in,
The joy and the pain we shared with each other—
I won’t lose them
I don’t want to lose them
Any single one of them

Even though there were many quarrels; even though there were many tears,
Why is it that the only thing that I recall is the laughing together—the laughing with you?

Our chance encounter, our parting: they were all days that passed by like dreams
Every time I think of your voice—your warmth—I can’t move
I won’t forget
I don’t want to forget
‘Til the end of time
