Lost Time / ROSUTAIMU /

2015-03-20: Added translation

Yes, that’s “loss”, not “lost”; if I’m not mistaken, “lost” is transliterated in katakana as ROSUTO / ロスト . Since it’s “loss”, the title should be interpreted similarly to “a time for loss”. Unfortunately, the machine translation is way too jumbled for me to figure out what it’s about, so I can’t give any meaning to the title. As Rosanne pointed out in her post, it actually is “Lost Time”.

“Lost Time” is the opening track for Oku Hanako’s 2012 album, “good-bye”, and it’s not a bad choice at all. Considering the rest of the tracks on the album, I’d say “Loss Time” can be taken as an average of sorts: walking pace with a light-but-not-too-light arrangement. In my opinion, it’s probably one of her most pleasurable songs to listen to.

(Loss Time) – Hanako Oku [zing.vn]

I’m here with my hands pressed up against my headphones, speechless in awe of how beautiful the song is. I’m here debating whether I should listen to it again; it’s so good that I want to, but it ended on such a satisfying note that I don’t want to ruin it (not that this is the first time I’ve listened to it).

Just leave me here to sigh in peace….

I find almost every album of hers has a song which is predictive of the overall feel of her following album. Although I closely associate “Loss Time” with “good-bye”, having heard Fuyu Hanabi / 冬花火 and Anata to Denwa / あなたと電話 from her latest single, I think this song might just be that predictive song on the album (the two songs on the single will also be included in her next album).

Translation

Falling too much in love was lonely
Even though I wanted to apologize, I still hurt you
I was always spoiled by your kindness, wasn’t I?

We teased each other over trivial things,
And even planted a few kisses on our entwined fingers
But even though we’ll see each other again soon, at the ticket gate I was crying as well

You taught me loneliness, and anxiety, and how to love
At the end, please, teach me how to let go of someone I love

Our chance encounter, our parting: they were all days that passed by like dreams
Every time I think of your voice—your warmth—I can’t move, even ’til now

Your sleeping face; your peevish grin; the two moles lined up on your back
You didn’t want anyone to see them—so I remember you saying

You taught me love, and solitude, and how to dote on someone
At the end, please, teach me how to let go of someone I love

The times we talked about our dreams, all the different places we walked together in,
The joy and the pain we shared with each other—
I won’t lose them
I don’t want to lose them
Any single one of them

Even though there were many quarrels; even though there were many tears,
Why is it that the only thing that I recall is the laughing together—the laughing with you?

Our chance encounter, our parting: they were all days that passed by like dreams
Every time I think of your voice—your warmth—I can’t move
I won’t forget
I don’t want to forget
‘Til the end of time

  1. I looked again and according to that list of keys for her songs that I always go back to, this song used to be called Suki na Hito / 好きな人 (“Person I like”). There is a Suki na Hito listed for the Oku Hanako Day concert, but she also has a really early song (Kataomoi early) with the same name and I suspect it’s the early song that was sung at the concert and not this one.
